Never have I ever purchased a natural deodorant that works. If that is your history as well, don’t let that detour you from trying this! THIS RECIPE WORKS. And not only does it work to keep you smelling fresh, but the bentonite clay in it actually helps your body detoxify from the aluminum-based deodorants of your past. I add in the use of hormone-assisting essential oils to boost its healing properties. It feels so good to replace something that full-on harms your body with something that detoxifies and nourishes your body’s functions. This is the only deodorant I have used for the past decade. When my sister started using this recipe, she noticed her back fat “melting” because that tissue was just holding toxins.
What is in this natural, hormone-balancing deodorant?
- Bentonite clay
- Arrowroot starch
- Baking soda
- Coconut oil
- Tallow
- Charcoal
- Beeswax
- Essential Oils
Bentonite Clay:
The fact that it is made of calcium, magnesium and iron means that it pumps nutrients into your body, let alone the benefits it provides by what it carries away. This is not some old wives-tale remedy—there are numerous legit scientific studies proving the efficacy of bentonite clay in removing toxins and heavy metals. Whenever we get sick, detox baths utilizing this clay is my first protocol. I also use it for masks and scrubs. I found this company that is the most affordable, yet tested and FDA certified to be free of toxins and heavy metals.
Arrowroot Starch:
I initially opted for arrowroot over cornstarch because organic arrowroot is easier to come by than non-gmo, organic cornstarch. I originally added it to my deodorant for its paste-making and absorbent abilities. However, looking into it, it is another nutritional powerhouse! Like bentonite, arrowroot is a great source of calcium and magnesium, and I’ve heard it said quite a bit lately that many of our health problems are attributed to lack of magnesium. With skin being our largest organ that absorbs everything that we put on it, we better be making sure to get vital nutrients in our skincare products! Arrowroot has a history of treating wounds and being used as an antidote to toxins.
Baking Soda:
Everyone knows baking soda absorbs bad smells. Did we not all grow up with a box of arm and hammer in the recesses of our refrigerators growing up? It also works well to absorb moisture, so mixing baking soda in with the bentonite clay is a given.
Coconut Oil:
Coconut is highly moisturizing, supports healing and reduces inflammation by its high content of Vitamin E. It is straight up fat and makes for a luscious paste.
Tallow:
Check this post for an in-depth description on all the benefits tallow. It’s loaded with vitamins and is exceedingly soothing to irritated skin. With shaving, armpits are often left feeling a little raw. Putting gritty baking soda directly on to sensitive skin would make this deodorant a deal breaker if we didn’t add tallow!
Charcoal:
Like bentonite clay, charcoal draws toxins and impurities out of pores. It also works as an absorbent, making charcoal a key player in most natural deodorants.
Beeswax:
I add a scant tablespoon of beeswax to stabilize the oils, regardless of the temperature. It is another carrier of vitamin E, so its serving us more than just stabilizing!
Essential Oils:
I love a good geranium/peppermint combo, but looking at how many lymph nodes are in the armpits, I figured it would be exceptionally beneficial to not just go for smell (which doesn’t really happen with essential oils, anyway—they all do something). Clary Sage is most known for its support in women’s hormones. However, Fennel, marjoram, lavender and peppermint are all excellent choices for hormone support in your deodorant.
How To Make Detoxifying Mineral Deodorant That Actually Works!
DIY Detoxifying Mineral Deodorant That Actually WORKS!
Deodorant that not only is not bad for you, it actually helps you detox heavy metals, toxins and impurities from your lymphatic system.
Ingredients
- 3 TBS coconut oil
- 3 TBS tallow
- 1 TBS beeswax
- 2 TBS bentonite clay
- 4 TBS arrowroot starch
- 4 TBS baking soda
- 1-2 capsules of charcoal
- 30 drops essential oil
Instructions
- In a double boiler, melt coconut oil, tallow and beeswax together.
- Once all is melted and mixed well, transfer to a glass bowl or container. You do not want the bentonite clay touching metal for too long because it attracts heavy metals to itself. We want those receptors empty and wide open to receive all of our toxins! Professionals say it’s okay to use a metal teaspoon or mixing tool, it’s just a matter of prolonged exposure. Still, if I can, I try to minimize all exposure to metal.
- Add in the bentonite clay, arrowroot starch, baking soda and charcoal, mix well, being vigilant to get all clumps out.
- Add 30 drops of your favorite essential oils for hormone support and mix well.
- Let cool to room temperature and enjoy!
Notes
I store mine in a small jar and keep a large popsicle stick on top of the jar to scoop it out. I have put it in push up tubes before, but find it works best with a scoop.

For the Men, I like to use 10 drops patchouli, 10 drops cedarwood, and 10 drops geranium EO. My kids tell me it works for about 2 days, then I get a little smelly!

Question for you Rebekah! I really love this creation, however I am getting a swollen lymph node in one of my armpits. Have you had any experience with this, if so, did it cease after any amount of time or do you recommend anything?
