How To Make Cilantro Last

Today we are looking at how to make my very favorite herb, cilantro, last longer than a few days.

Nothing is more disappointing than Taco Tuesday coming around, knowing your fridge is stocked with the cilantro you picked up last weekend…only to find it slimy and rotten!

Last week, I shared how to make homemade salsa. I said that I typically have all the ingredients on hand at any give time. This is only possible because of this tip I’m about to share!

Years and years ago, (13? 14, maybe?) I happened upon The Splendid Table. I’m not a regular listener of NPR, so this serendipity was an invaluable gift from God! The host shared this tip, and I have used it every single time I’ve purchased cilantro since then, and am so thankful that I pretty much always have it on hand. So many of my staple recipes require this versatile herb!

How do you make cilantro last longer than a few days?

  • When you get home, rinse the cilantro well and trim the ends off. Shake well, and let it dry pretty thoroughly.
  • Fill a glass (I use a pint mason jar) about half way with purified water and put the cilantro in, like a vase of flowers.
  • Cover with a paper towel.
  • Cover paper-toweled cilantro with plastic. I use a grocery bag and tie the handles tightly around the jar.
  • Place in refrigerator.
  • If you don’t use the it within one week, remove from refrigerator, trim ends again, refresh the water. Re-cover with paper towel and plastic.
  • Enjoy cilantro being ready for you when you need it!

Don’t forget to let me know if you try it! I’d love to hear if you have any other tips for preserving the life of cilantro! Leave a comment below or let me know on instagram @ournomadichomestead!
