Here are the best essential oils for allergies and bites, all rolled (er… ‘dropped’) into one easy blend to use! If you are someone whose respiratory system is fatigued from allergies, or someone who has whatever it is that bugs love in your blood… I have good news by way of a wonderful solution for you today!
I have tried many of the essential oil blends that different companies offer, but not one of them have fazed my allergies when they come on strong. Not all natural remedies are created equal! However, one time, instead of searching for oils related to ‘allergy relief,’ I looked up ‘natural antihistamine’ and found this company. I have never used their essential oils before, but they had such thorough information on why it is that these specific essential oils work to balance your histamine levels, rather than block them like over the counter medications.
Look no further for a holistic approach to symptoms of seasonal allergies and bug bites.
If you are someone who just wants to buy the product and not fuss with making them yourself, check out Vibrant Blue Oils. However, I am an avid Eden’s Garden supporter, and I happened to have all of these powerful essential oils on hand, so I ventured into blending them myself.
The result of my experiment was nothing short of relief. I honestly couldn’t believe how quickly putting a drop of this inside my nose stopped a sneezing fit. Sinus pressure and my runny nose were relieved by gently massaging it into my sinuses. There are many different ways to utilize this blend of essential oils. If you have had adverse reactions to putting drops of essential oil directly on your skin, even with a carrier oil, then aromatherapy through a diffuser will still work wonders.
I believe the key to this blend being so powerful is the antihistamine properties in the blue tansy and chamomile oils. I don’t know why they’re not in every single “allergy blend” out there.
What are histamines?
“Histamine is a chemical messenger produced by the body’s immune system that plays a role in various bodily functions. These include immune responses, digestion, and alertness. Histamine is involved in inflammation, allergic reactions, and gastric acid secretions.” (AI overview) There are immune cells called “mast cells” that host the histamine and tend to over-react. We don’t want to completely block them, because histamines are doing what they are supposed to do. But we do want them to stop over-reacting. Not every oil in this blend is an antihistamine, but they all work together in a gentle and harmonious way with our body to combat its well-intended over reactions!
If you’ve ever heard that there’s a correlation between gut health and allergies, it’s true. There are enzymes in our gut lining that turn histamines into inactive compounds that are excreted. However, while we are working on repairing out guts, here is a natural remedy for combating allergy season and various bites and stings that come with the beautiful weather this time of year!
Best Oils For Allergies and Bites:
BLUE TANSY OIL: Contains the compounds sabinene, camphor, chamazulene and myrcene, which contribute to its ability to soothe irritation, reduce redness, and ease itching associated with allergies and other skin issues
ROMAN CHAMOMILE OIL: Reduces mucus congestion, irritation, swelling, and skin conditions. It’s ability to inhibit a mast cells and reduce histamine levels contribute to its effectiveness in managing allergic reactions.
LAVENDER OIL: Inhibits the release of the mast cells, and soothes swelling and redness.
ROSEMARY OIL: Containing ‘rosmarinic acid,’ it suppresses inflammatory responses of white blood cells and allergic antibodies. Rosemary also alters mast cell activation and reduces inflammatory mediators. All of this contributes to its ability to reduce swelling and inflammation.
PEPPERMINT OIL: Stabilizes mast cells from over reacting, making this an incredible addition to reduce allergic reactions. Just one little sniff and sinuses are cleared!
SPRUCE OIL: While it is not an antihistamine, it is a massive anti inflammatory with the terpene and phenolic compounds found in the needles.
CAMPHOR or RAVENSARA OIL: Not only anti inflammatory, but also a counter-irritant which provides cooling and warming sensations that distracts from the itchy skin irritation of bites or stings. Camphor is also a strong natural decongestant.
VETIVER OIL: A comforting anti inflammatory and antiseptic. The warm, earthy scent of vetiver is not everyone’s favorite (similar to patchouli, which I happen to love!) but it is a very gentle oil for anyone with sensitive skin or eyes. My daughter can’t handle the fumes of the minty or camphor-y oils in this list because her eyes are so sensitive to the fumes.
How to use your anti-histamine blend:
BITES / STINGS: Drop the blend onto the affected area of a mosquito bite or bee sting to stop the incessant itching.
SNEEZING: Place one to two drops on a q-tip and swipe the inside of your nostrils. We don’t have to go back to the 2020’s when those of us who declined had to receive weekly tests shoved as far up as possible. 😉 A simple swipe at the base of the nostril works!
CONGESTION: Place 1-2 drops on your sternum, base of neck or behind your ears.
GENERAL ALLERGY SYMPTOMS: Diffuse 5 drops in a diffuser for aromatherapy, or 1-2 drops on the soles of feet.
GUT / FOOD SYMPTOMS: Place a drop on your finger and apply in a clockwise direction around the belly button. This is not so much for an upset stomach, as it is a histamine response to food. I’ve had an immediate response in my body to eating sulfates/sulfites found in things like the Mezzeta Giardiniera vegetable medley. I got a scratchy throat, felt “buzzy” in my head (if any of you have felt that, you’ll know what I mean!) and immediately started sneezing. This is the sort of food issue that these essential oils help.
How to Make Your Allergy/Bite Essential Oil Blend:
In an empty 10-15 ml essential oil bottle, combine the following essential oils:
- 25 drops blue tansy
- 20 drops Roman chamomile
- 20 drops lavender
- 15 drops rosemary
- 12 drops peppermint
- 10 drops spruce (black or blue works)
- 8 drops ravensara or camphor
- 5 drops vetiver
Those oils should get you close to a half-filled bottle. Top off with fractioned coconut oil, jojoba oil or your favorite carrier oil and shake well. Almond oil adds a little sweet scent to your blend! If you don’t have all of these, don’t worry! You can easily sub some of the ingredients with things like lemon oil, tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, basil oil, sandalwood oil or frankincense oil. All of these have similar benefits to those that we touted, so feel free to sub anything other than blue tansy and Roman chamomile.
As always, it is imperative to use pure essential oils. If you don’t have a favorite brand that you trust yet, give Eden’s Garden a try. Their oils are pure and affordable, and they support worthy causes.
Use in a variety of ways any time you’re feeling seasonal allergy symptoms or a histamine response from bites or stings.

Pro tip: Look at the oils in the list and see which one has the lowest level and use that bottle to make the blend in. I was low on rosemary, and don’t think I came close to 15 drops, so I love that whatever residue was in the bottle and lid were able to be utilized in the blend!
