If you’re here, you are likely aware of the incredible benefits of Reishi mushrooms. Also, maybe you’ve tried it already and found that it’s actually quite unpleasant to consume! I was ruining every smoothie, no matter how diluted it was, trying to get this nutritional punch into my body!
Reishi Mushrooms:
We stopped by a mushroom booth at our local farmers market, and they were promoting this book so Charlie picked up a copy. Our intention for using the book was for mushroom information and identification while foraging. However, right away, Reishi caught our eye (in the book… unfortunately, we have yet to see it in the wild!). Reishi is listed under so many benefits in the book!
After having our curiosities piqued for Reishi mushrooms, imagine my delight when we happened upon a bag of it at the Grocery Outlet, of all places! But you know my hopes were dashed when I got home and found no edible way to get it into my daily diet. I took to the internet to find out HOW people were making this happen.
Reishi Mushroom Hot Chocolate to the Rescue!
Paleo Mama’s hot chocolate was the first thing that pulled up, and I am ALWAYS DOWN for chocolate, so I was more than willing to give it a try! Wow. Love at first sip. I was so amazed that the culprit of every disgusting smoothie I’d made in the last few months was hiding in this drink! I changed a few things from her original recipe to accommodate my habits and nutritional goals.
Other Superfood Ingredients:
Since we’re masking some off-flavored ingredients with cacao, why not load up and make this as nutrient dense as possible!?
Maca Root: This also goes by the name “ginseng” and is promoted in energy-boosting drinks. It is a Peruvian root that is an adaptogen and is an incredible support for hormones.
Marshmallow Root: Unfortunately, marshmallows made these days don’t even use this nutritious root anymore, and the root tastes nothing like the modern confection! It has innumerable benefits, but I love it for its gut healing properties, and also helps soothe sore throats!
Dandelion Root: Very purifying of the body and an excellent pre-biotic to feed the micro biome. I love this mix of dandelion root, chicory root, barley, and rye. It tastes delicious and was one of few treats I enjoyed while battling candida in 2018.
Raw Cacao: Loaded with antioxidants, this treat supports brain function and benefits the gut, among many others!
Warming Spices: cinnamon, cardamom and ginger all work to help control blood sugar, enhance circulation and promote good digestive health.
Mineral Salt: This brand features a comprehensive mineral and trace element profile and the lowest natural sodium levels. Regular iodine-free salt works, too.
Monk fruit / Erythritol sweetener: Using this natural, anti-inflammatory sugar replacement means that we can have this every day for the nutrient benefits without having to worry about the sugar (even natural, healthy-in-small-doses variety).
Updated to add:
Slippery Elm: This tree native to North America is a mucilage that coats the mouth, throat, stomach and intestines! Great for rebuilding the gut lining, and a key ingredient in Throat Coat Tea!
Gelatin: I cover the benefits of bone broth here, but as a family of 6, we go through way more bone broth than we can keep up with for daily use. Adding gelatin to the hot chocolate gives us a daily dose of the benefits of bone broth. (Also, check this post for another delicious and fun use for gelatin!)
Reishi Mushroom Hot Chocolate is SO simple to make:
Grab all of these superfoods, add them to a jar and give it a good whisk or shake. That’s all!
Hot chocolate is the best place to hide all kinds of nutrients! If there’s something else you’re trying to take every day, but struggling to, try adding it to your hot chocolate! Most things hide quite well!

How to enjoy:
I cannot be bothered to warm milk if not for special occasions, so to make this doable for a daily supplement to my diet, I use either my morning coffee or hot water then top it off with half and half. Add one tablespoon to either hot water or coffee. I add about an inch of liquid first, mix it well, then top it off with the rest of the liquid and half and half.
Parting Testimony:
Without going into all the details of how good these ingredients are for you, (please look them up for yourself!) I can attest that after drinking this daily for a month, my cycle returned to 28 days for the first time in over six months. Nothing else notable changed in my habits, so I’m thinking this stuff works!

How To Make Reishi Mushroom Hot Chocolate
Reishi Mushroom Hot Chocolate

Get your mornings off to the best start by drinking a cup of this nutritious hot chocolate every morning!
Ingredients
- 1 C Raw Cacao Powder
- 1 C Monk Fruit / Erythritol Sweetener
- 2 TBS Reishi Mushroom Powder
- 2 TBS Roasted Dandelion Root
- 2 TBS Marshmallow Root
- 2 TBS Maca Root
- 2 TBS Slippery Elm
- 2 TBS Grass Fed Beef Gelatin
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- 1 tsp Cardamom
- 1 tsp Ginger
- 1 tsp Salt
Instructions
- Add all of the ingredients to a quart jar, and shake well to combine.
To use, add one tablespoon to either coffee or boiled water. You can use milk, but I’m 100x less likely to make it if I have to dirty a separate pan and babysit the milk so it doesn’t scald. I normally add it to my morning coffee and top it off with half and half to make a mocha. Using water with half and half makes perfectly creamy and delightful hot chocolate. Topping it with homemade whipped cream is always a good idea!
Notes
Add any other nutrients you’re trying to take every day! (Stay away from live cultures like probiotics that will be killed by hot water.)
