There is no reason to buy canned marinara sauce when you can make the best spaghetti sauce from scratch— something infinitely more delicious with basic kitchen staples!
There are a million spaghetti recipes, and it’s a simple food to make without even using a recipe… which is how I stumbled upon this. I made it one night, out of my head, with the ingredients we had on hand, and my family raved. As maximum nutrition is always my goal, I’ve been known to add every vegetable in our fridge— so I’m assuming this was inspired by a bare-boned kitchen!
Charlie is a tough critic, but he told me to write down exactly what I did, and to please do this with spaghetti from now on. Ha ha! That’s how we’ve landed here with a blog post on the most ubiquitous food, from a non-Italian, to boot! I’m not claiming this is authentic… just that my family loves how this turns out. This is a lighter sauce that doesn’t coat the noodles super thick. I use 3 cans of tomatoes to 1 can of tomato sauce. Feel free to adjust according to your “coating” preference!
I hope your family enjoys it, too!
Best Spaghetti Ingredients:
- Extra large yellow onion, or two medium onions
- 2 pounds grass fed ground beef
- 6 garlic cloves
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon oregano
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning or herb d’ provence
- 1 15 oz can tomato sauce
- 3 15 oz cans diced tomatoes
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
Directions:
Sauté the onion, beef, garlic, salt and seasonings. Once browned, add the tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. Taste and add more salt, if needed. Stir in sugar and simmer on low heat for at least one hour.
Cook spaghetti noodles according to the package, top with plenty of this delicious sauce and freshly grated Manchego or Parmesan cheese. Serve alongside some kale salad and enjoy! An easy, low-effort meal that makes everyone happy!
If you really want to make this a special dinner, consider making your own sourdough pasta! (We have this kitchen aid attachment. I showed my girls how to use it, and now all I have to do is prepare the dough and they do the rest! This affordable hand crank pasta roller looks fun and has great reviews, if you don’t a kitchen aid! If you have young helpers, I’m sure they’d be just as happy to use this machine!)
